This painting is inspired by a textbook illustration of Acetobacter specimens, which are the bacteria that turn juice and wine into vinegar. I wanted to combine the forms of bacteria and place them in the context of a baroque landscape, which is usually a pictorial context reserved for mystical beings, deities, and christian stories. I wanted to make a painting that walks the line left by the clash between the old enchanted world of the past and the rational scientific world of today. (this painting is made on a very thick panel, and it sticks out of the wall. For more photos of it, please get in touch with me. I'll gladly send you more photos and information.)
